An ingrown toenail is when the nail penetrates the skin at the side of the nail, resulting in discomfort and pain. Firefly Foot & Ankle Clinic Podiatrist's can conservatively manage the ingrown nail or carry out nail surgery for a permanent fix.
An ingrown toenail (onychocryptosis) occurs with the nail penetrates the skin at the side of the nail plate (sulcus). Once the edge of the nail breaks through the skin, it produces inflammation. Initially presenting as a minor discomfort, it may progress into an infection. In some cases, this can also result in extra tissue forming (hypergranulation tissue) which increases pressure at the nail. There are many factors that cause an ingrown toenail from poor trimming to ill-fitting shoes.
The nail can be cleared with regular routine care, however, if this fails and there is reoccurring painful infections, nail surgery can be performed our Podiatrists. This procedure if completed under local anaesthetic and using Phenolisation to prevent regrowth.
